Free Crochet Mushroom Pattern: Create Your Own Adorable Fungi

This free crochet mushroom pattern has little hearts for dots and will add a touch of enchantment to your home decor or make a delightful gift for friends and family. Level: Easy, written in US terms

Materials

  • 50 grams size 4 worsted weight yarn in White, Red
  • Scrap amounts size 4 worsted weight yarn in Black, Pink
  • Crochet hook size H8 5.00 mm or size needed to obtain gauge
  • Crochet hook size G6 4.00 mm
  • Tapestry needle
  • Fiber Fill
  • 2 black buttons
  • Stitch marker

Notes

  • Lovely Mushroom's Bottom and Top are worked using 2 strands yarn held together.
  • Lovely Mushroom is worked in continuous rounds from the bottom up; do not join unless instructed to do so. Place stitch marker in first st of round and move as work progresses.
  • Stuff firmly, but not so the stuffing shows through the stitches.
  • The Hearts are worked separately with 1 strand yarn and smaller hook and sewn on.
  • Lovely Mushroom is approximately 8 inches tall.
  • A magic ring may be used to begin components if preferred.
  • Buttons may be used for eyes ONLY if piece is intended for people over 3 years of age.
  • The Mushroom Bottom will likely look triangular when worked, but will fill out when stuffed and shaped.

Gauge

2.5 sts = 1 inch; 3 rows = 1 inch, but gauge will vary between yarn brands and content

Special Stitches

  • Dec (decrease): [Insert hook in next st, yo, pull up a loop] twice, yo, draw through all 3 loops on hook.
  • Inc (increase): 2 sc in indicated st.
  • Sc blo (single crochet back loop only): Single crochet into the back loop only of indicated st.

Lovely Mushroom

Mushroom Bottom, with 2 strands White and larger hook

Rnd 1: Ch 2, work 9 sc into 2nd ch from hook. Place stitch marker in first st. (9 sts)

Rnd 2: Inc in each st around. (18 sts)

Rnd 3: [Sc into next st, inc]. (27 sts)

Rnd 4: Sc into each st around.

Rnd 5: [Sc into next 2 sts, inc]. (36 sts)

Rnd 6: Sc blo around.

Rnd 7: Sc into each st around.

Rnd 8: [Sc into next 10 sts, dec]. (33 sts)

Rnd 9: [Sc into next 9 sts, dec]. (30 sts)

Rnd 10: [Sc into next 8 sts, dec]. (27 sts)

Rnds 11-14: Sc into each st around. At end of Rnd 14, add face:

  • Eyes: If piece is intended for people over 3 years of age, sew 2 black buttons to front of Mushroom Bottom roughly between Rnds 10, 11, leaving 4 sts between Eyes.
  • Mouth: With tapestry needle and black yarn, sew a small "v" between the Eyes at roughly Rnd 9.
  • Cheeks: With tapestry needle and pink yarn, sew 2 small straight sts one on top of the other, under each Eye.

Rnd 15: [Sc into next 7 sts, dec]. (24 sts)

Rnd 16: Sc into each st around.

Rnd 17: [Sc into next 2 sts, dec]. (18 sts)

Rnd 18: Sc into each st around.

Rnd 19: Inc in each st around. (36 sts)

Rnd 20: [Sc into next 3 sts, inc]. (45 sts)

Rnd 21: [Sc into next 4 sts, inc]. (54 sts).  At end of last rnd, join with a sl st in first st.  Fasten off, leaving a 6-inch tail to tuck in. Stuff to Rnd 17.

Mushroom Top, with 2 strands Red and larger hook

Rnd 1: Ch 2, work 9 sc into 2nd ch from hook. Place stitch marker in first st. (9 sts)

Rnd 2: [Sc into next 2 sts, inc]. (12 sts)

Rnd 3: [Sc into next 3 sts, inc]. (15 sts)

Rnd 4: [Sc into next 4 sts, inc]. (18 sts)

Rnd 5: [Sc into next 5 sts, inc]. (21 sts)

Rnd 6: [Sc into next 6 sts, inc]. (24 sts)

Rnd 7: [Sc into next st, inc]. (36 sts)

Rnd 8: Sc into each st around.

Rnd 9: [Sc into next 3 sts, inc]. (45 sts)

Rnd 10: Sc into each st around.

Rnd 11: [Sc into next 4 sts, inc]. (54 sts)

Rnd 12: Sc into each st around.  Do not fasten off, but work the Hearts.

Heart (make up to 6) with 1 strand White and smaller hook

To begin, Ch 5 and Sl st in first ch to make a ring or use a magic ring to start. 

Rnd 1: Ch 2.  Work the following into the ring:  2 dc, 2 sc, ch 1, 1 dc, ch 1, 2 sc, 2 dc, ch 2, sl st into center.  Fasten off, leaving a 12-inch tail for sewing.  Sew randomly to Mushroom Top.
