Why a Cat-Shaped Pocket Pillow?

Cats have long been symbols of comfort and relaxation, making them the ideal inspiration for an adorable little pocket pillow. The added pocket makes this pillow even more special, providing a convenient spot for a gift card, a little notebook, or even an engagement ring!  Plus, it's a wonderful handmade gift for the cat lovers in your life.

Level: Easy, written in US terms

Materials

  • 50 grams size 4 (worsted weight) yarn in White
  • 15 grams each size 4 (worsted weight) yarn in Pink, Red
  • Scrap amounts size 4 (worsted weight) yarn in Black
  • Crochet hook size G 4.00 mm
  • Tapestry needle
  • Fiber Fill
  • Stitch marker
  • 2 buttons ONLY if piece is intended for people over 3 years of age
  • Optional: white acrylic paint

Gauge

Body: 3 sts = 1 inch; 3 rnds = 1 inch, but will vary between yarn brands and content

Notes

  • The Pillow/Pocket is worked in one piece.
  • The hearts are worked separately and sewn on.
  • Stuff lightly
  • The finished piece is roughly 5" x 5"

Pillow/Pocket

Row 1: Ch 19, turn. Sc into 2nd ch from hook and into each ch across. (18 sts). Ch 1, turn.

Rows 2-47: Sc into 2nd st from hook and into each st across. (18 sts each row). Ch 1, turn.

Row 48: Sc into 2nd st from hook and into each st across. Ch 1, fasten off leaving a 12-inch tail.

Fold over at Row 20 and sew as shown in photos, creating a flap.

Heart (make 2 in Pink and 1 in Red)

Begin with a 6-inch tail. To begin, Ch 5 and sl st in first ch to make a ring. 

Rnd 1: Ch 2. Work the following into the ring:  3 trc, 3 dc, ch 1, trc, ch 1, 3 dc, 3 trc, ch 2, sl st into centre.  (19 sts). Fasten off, leaving a 9-inch tail.

  • Sew hearts to "flap," making sure to sew to correct side (the side that faces out).

Finishing

  • With White yarn and tapestry needle, sew through all thicknesses down both sides, stuffing lightly just prior to closing the second side.
  • Ears: With Pink yarn and tapestry needle, pinch top corners flat and sew straight sts diagonally on each side, as shown in photos.
  • Eyes: Sew 2 buttons to center front of pillow, as shown. **Use buttons ONLY if piece is intended for people over 3 years of age***
  • Optional Eye Shine: with White acrylic paint, sew a thin line along bottom left of each eye. Then add 2 dots in upper right.
  • Mouth/nose: With Black yarn and tapestry needle, sew an "x" centered evenly between and below the eyes as shown.
