Crochet Lucky Bug: A Charming and Fun Project for All Skill Levels

In this post, we’ll guide you through the process of creating your own crochet lucky bug. Grab your yarn and hook, and let’s get started!

Level: Easy, written in US terms

Materials

  • Scrap amounts size 4 worsted weight yarn in orange, dark green, light green, black
  • Crochet hook size 4.00 mm or size needed to obtain gauge
  • Tapestry needle
  • Fiber Fill
  • 2 small black buttons ONLY if intended for people over 3 years of age
  • Stitch marker

Gauge

3 sts = 1 inch; 5 rows = 1 inch, but gauge will vary between yarn brands and content

Notes

  • Lucky Bug is worked in continuous rounds; do not join unless instructed to do so.  Place stitch marker in first st of round and move as work progresses.
  • Stuff firmly, but not so the stuffing shows through the stitches.
  • Lucky Bug is roughly 2.5 inches long.
  • A magic ring may be used to begin each piece if preferred.

Special Techniques

  • Change colour: Work last st until last 2 loops remain on hook, drop current color, yo with next color, draw through both loops.

Special Stitches

  • Dec (decrease): [Insert hook in next st, yo, pull up a loop] twice, yo, draw through all 3 loops on hook.
  • Inc (increase): 2 sc in indicated st.

 

Lucky Bug

Body, begin with Orange

Rnd 1: Ch 2, work 9 sc into 2nd ch from hook. Place stitch marker in first st. (9 sts)

Rnd 2: Inc into each sc around. (18 sts)

Rnd 3: [Sc into next st, inc]. (27 sts)

Rnd 4: Sc into each st around.  Change colour to Dark Green.

Rnds 5, 6: Sc into each st around.  At end of Rnd 6, change colour to Light Green.

Rnds 7, 8: Sc into each st around.  At the end of Rnd 8, change colour to Dark Green.

Rnds 9, 10: Sc into each st around.  At the end of Rnd 9, change colour to Light Green.

Rnds 11, 12: Sc into each st around.  At end of Rnd 12, change colour to Orange.

Rnd 13: Sc into each st around.

Rnd 14: [Sc into next st, dec]. (18 sts). Stuff front end.

Rnd 15: Dec around. (9 sts). Finish stuffing. At end of last rnd, join with a sl st in first st.  Fasten off, leaving a 9-inch tail.  With tapestry needle and working in front loops only, weave tail through last rnd, pull gently to close and secure. 

Shamrock Wing (make 2), with Dark Green

To begin, Ch 5 and Sl st in first ch to make a ring.

Rnd 1: Work the following into the ring [ch 3, 3 trc, ch 3, sl st into ring] 3 times.  Fasten off, leaving a 9-inch tail for sewing.  Sew Shamrock Wings to center top of Body, leaving a small space between.

Face

  • Eyes: Sew 2 small black buttons to front of Lucky Bug as shown in photo. *If intended for people under 3, Eyes must be embroidered on instead.
  • Mouth: With black yarn and tapestry needle, sew a small "V" in the center of the face.
